Petrol fights back

Date: 18 November 2008

Rich Green

Petrol has risen in popularity as the company car fuel of choice, according to research by GE Capital Solutions.

Nearly 11% of respondents to the survey have seen an increase in the amount of petrol vehicles on their fleet compared to 12 months ago. Only 3% reported an increase in the amount of diesel cars.

Rich Green, managing director at GE Capital Solutions, said: "One fact that is becoming increasingly influential is the significant price difference between petrol and diesel. The latter is now so expensive that fuel economy has to be significantly better to justify choosing a diesel car."

The survey of fleet decision makers also showed a rise in popularity for alternatively fuelled vehicles. Both electric and hybrid vehicles have seen a rise in sales.

However, Green said: "The percentage of electric and hybrid cars on UK fleets remains tiny but the increases signalled in the survey show that more leading edge fleets are starting to adopt them, which is encouraging."

Use of fuel cards has reportedly declined, despite the recent fluctuations in fuel prices. Overall use has dropped by 5.9% with 37.6% of respondents said use has fallen.
