Politics focus: Road charging research costs

Date: 31 July 2009   |   Author: Tristan Young

Norman Baker LibDem MP for Lewes has asked what Government studies, trials and pilot schemes have been commissioned on road pricing since 1997, and how much each cost.

Lead transport minister in the Commons Sadiq Khan said £39m had been spent, the most recent being £10m in 2008 on "the Demonstrations Project, examining the technology and processes that would be needed if any road pricing scheme was to have the ability to charge by time and distance travelled, as well as place. The first phases of this work are under way".

Khan added: "However, the Government have no plans to introduce national road pricing."
