AA set to strike on bank holiday

Patrol staff at the AA vehicle breakdown service will strike in a dispute over pensions on bank holiday weekend, the union has announced.
The 48-hour walkouts will start on May 2, just days before the election.
Alistair Maclean, national secretary of the Independent Democratic Union, said members were unhappy about reforms which they say could cut their pension values by nearly half.
About 2500 AA workers will take part in the first strike on 2-3 May, a Bank Holiday weekend that is typically one of the busiest periods on the roads.
Details of further two-day strikes will be announced later, Maclean added. There will be three or four walkouts.
The AA has reassured members that good service will remain with more than 400 non-union patrol workers helping to provide breakdown cover if the strikes go ahead.
In the most recent vote by members of the IDU, 57% were in favour of strike action.
The AA has accused the IDU of "jumping the gun" by balloting AA patrols on strike action over proposed change to the AA pension scheme before the consultation period ends on 23 April.
