Fleet drivers fail to concentrate on road

Date: 18 October 2010

Fleet drivers are putting lives at risk by failing to concentrate fully on the road while driving.

Research by the Fuelcard Company found that motorists only concentrate on driving for 25% of the time they spend behind the wheel. Furthermore it claimed a quarter of fatal road accidents in the UK are work-related and claimed in-car distractions such as mobile phones and sat nav systems created dangerous distractions.

The firm said most casualties occurred within the morning and evening rush hours of 8am-9am and 5pm-6pm. It found that more than 20 people a week are killed in work-related driving accidents and 250 seriously injured.

Jakes de Kock, managing director of the Fuelcard Company urged fleet managers to invest in anti-collision warning technology and emergency braking systems for their vehicles. He said the plethora of communication devices and recent developments such as hand-held computers had turned the cabin into a moving office and encouraged a dangerous culture of "multi-tasking while on the road".

While de Kock acknowledged warning systems should never be an alternative to concentrated driving, he added: "Fleet managers who aren't already thinking about investing in anti-collision systems need to wake up to this and take precautions before it's too late."
