Fuel card fraud on the rise

Date: 02 June 2010

The cost of fuel card fraud has risen to £40m per year, with a 6% rise over the past two years, according to diesel bunkering firm Keyfuels. That rise means an additional three million victims, according to the firm.

"Fleet managers should ensure their fuel cards have the necessary security features, or fraud could end up costing their business a great deal of money," said Keyfuels managing director Peter Bridgen. "Sadly, fuel card crime is on the rise and fleet businesses need to take extra precautions to ensure they don't end up becoming a victim."

Bridgen claims his firm's cards have "a number of security features, which can flag up irregular fuel transactions as they happen", rather than some systems that take two-three days before fraudulent activity is detected.
