Royal awards for fleet safety pioneers

Date: 08 December 2010

Two major companies have won Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards for their initiatives to protect staff driving at work.

Infrastructure services business Balfour Beatty scooped the Fleet Safety Award sponsored by Fleet Support Group while shopper marketing solutions firm Reach Contact collected the IAM Drive and Survive backed Fleet Safety Award.

Prince Michael of Kent, who presented the awards, said: "Both companies have implemented far-reaching occupational road risk management programmes that other businesses would do well to follow."

He also praised the businesses' management teams for investing in initiatives to improve the safety of their employees.

Balfour Beatty operates a fleet of 14,000 vehicles in the UK and has earned Business Champion status under the Government-backed Driving for Better Business campaign, which is run by Roadsafe.

It has adopted a top down road safety management policy, including the launch of Drive Safe, Arrive safe courses. Its Plant & Fleet Services arm uses a Driver Risk Index and a bespoke driver risk management scheme, which the company claims resulted in a 39% reduction in accidents between 2008/2009.

Reach, which runs a fleet of 600 company cars, has introduced an NVQ competence based qualification for staff who drive at work.
