Vauxhall believes its Vivaro e-Concept, an electric van with an extended range of up to 250 miles, will provide an ideal environmentally-friendly solution for urban operators.
The technology works by using a small petrol engine acting as a generator, which recharges the battery on the move rather than taking over from the electric motor.
Known as a range-extended plug-in hybrid, General Motors has been touting the system in its Opel Ampera and Chevrolet Volt passenger cars, which will be on sale in 2012.
Vauxhall also presented new chassis and panel van crew cab variants for the Movano at the Hanover Commercial Vehicle Show last month. The van is now available with more than 300 body variations. Other highlights included the 1.3-litre CDTI Corsavan with start/stop technology for which Vauxhall claimed fuel consumption of 70mpg and a CO2 emissions figure of 105g/km.
