Drug and mobile driving on the rise

Drug driving and the use of mobile phones at the wheel are on the rise, according to the RAC.
Research conducted by the organisation claimed that the number of 17- to 24-year olds driving under the influence of drugs had risen from 5% to 9% in the past year.
It also revealed an increase in drivers using smartphones at the wheel, reporting a rise from 12% to 18% in the number of 25- to 44-year olds checking emails and looking at social media sites while driving.
In response, road safety minister Mike Penning said the Government was proposing raising the fine for using a mobile phone while driving from £60 to between £80 and £100 later this year.
