The start point for the best source of fleet information

TfL launches live online traffic news system

Date: 07 February 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Transport for London has launched an online traffic updates service to help drivers avoid the capital's most congested areas.

Available on the department's website at tlf.gov.uk/trafficnews or via an online TWITTER feed @TfLTrafficNews, the system shows a bird's eye view of the worst-affected areas within the city.

Users will also be able to receive information on incidents that may affect their journey and have access to 170 traffic cameras.

The live data is being made available to software and app developers free of charge, in the hope that it will become more widespread.

According to TfL, the new measures, along with existing efforts such as permits to reduce the impact of roadworks, should help to reduce severe delays on the capital's red routes by almost 40% by the end of this financial year compared with January 2010.

The move comes as London Mayor Boris Johnson has come under fire for failing to meet his targets for electric vehicles.

The current figure of 2313 is 2% of his target figure of 100,000 EVs to be on the capital's streets as soon as possible. There are also around 400 charging points in existence compared with previously announced plans for 1300 by next year and 25,000 by 2015.
