Brake: Company car drivers take more risks

Almost a third of company car drivers read and send text messages when on the road, according to research by road safety charity Brake and insurance firm Direct Line.
One in six admitted to grooming, such as putting on make-up or shaving, while behind the wheel and more than 75% confessed to speeding at more than 35mph in built up areas.
The research revealed that people driving for business are more likely to take these risks than non-work drivers.
In the UK 30% of road journeys are made by drivers at work and Government statistics estimate they are up to 40% more likely to have an accident than people driving in their own time.
Brake has published new guidance for fleet managers on grey fleets. In the UK grey fleet cars are on average seven years old - three years older than company-owned cars when they tend to leave service.
The guidance suggests grey fleet drivers and their vehicles should be subjected to the same rigorous safety checks and risk assessments as other company drivers.
