Clean and frugal used cars in demand

Date: 21 October 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

The demand for more economical used vehicles with lower road tax is on the up according to experts at auction firm BCA.

A poll of second-hand car buyers published in the company's Used Car Market Report revealed that the majority of buyers were looking for a used car with better fuel consumption (29% of those surveyed) and lower road tax (22%) than their existing vehicle when they came to purchased a new model.

Tim Naylor, editor of the report, commented: "When it comes to buying their next used car, there is definitely change in the air.

"[Those polled] overwhelmingly said they would look for a different type of car next time - with 90% of car owners planning to take this route. Three years ago, 20% of motorists said they would buy the same car next time; now that has halved to just 10%.

"Critically, this drive for change has been brought about by the rising costs associated with running a car. Cost and economy are going to remain significant factors for motorists.

"However, the critical factor from the used car dealers' viewpoint is the desire expressed by motorists to drive 'a more fuel-efficient car' cited by 13% of our survey this year - creating opportunities and no doubt challenges for when it comes to sourcing the most attractive, yet efficient used cars for retail."
