Fleet registrations in 2012 stayed relatively stagnant, rising by just 0.6% compared with the previous year, with 1,025,501 vehicles sold versus 1,019,126 in 2011, according to the SMMT.

Private sales rose by 12.9% to 929,440 cars from 823,094 in the prior year.

Overall, the new car market topped two million units, at 2,044,609, the highest annual volume since 2008, but still 14.9% below pre-recession 2007 when 2.4 million cars were sold.

The Fiesta was the best-selling car, for the fourth consecutive year, with 109,256 cars sold, compared with the Vauxhall Corsa in second place with 89,434 units and the Ford Focus in third position with 83,115.

The remaining top ten includes the Vauxhall Astra, VW Golf, Nissan Qashqai, BMW 3-Series, VW Polo, Mercedes C-Class and BMW 1-series.
