Government pledges £162m to tackle road congestion

The Government has announced the second wave of funding to tackle congestion on UK roads. The £190m Local Pinch Point Fund was originally announced in the 2012 Autumn Statement and the transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has now released £162m of that fund and declared which areas will undergo the resultant work.
The move sees a further 62 schemes put in place, in addition to the initial 10, all of which are designed to tackle bottleneck areas. Along with funding from local authorities, the total Government investment has now risen to more than £300m.
A full list of the locations and planned works can be found at www.gov.uk (search for 'Local Pinch Point Fund'). The Government said the changes would entail upgrades to roads and bridges and new access routes among other measures.
McLoughlin said of the programme: "The schemes we have announced. are designed to target key bottlenecks around the country, making life easier for the thousands."
