The Government has announced a £28bn package for upgrading the UK's roads and transport systems.
The funding was announced in June but has now been guaranteed by a Government paper and includes: £12bn to repair and maintain damaged and potholed roads, half of which is said to be dedicated to resurfacing 80% of major roads and motorways by 2020; £500m for electric and low-emission vehicle development; and money for 221 miles of additional motorways and carriageway widening as well as various efforts to improve congestion in the country's most clogged-up areas.
The move has been billed as the biggest and most significant upgrade of the UK's roads and transport system in history, and the scheme has also been ring-fenced so successive Governments will not be able to alter the policies now in place.
Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "[The] changes will bring an end to the short-term thinking that has blighted investment in England's roads so that we can deliver the infrastructure our economy needs.
"Backed by the Government's £28bn commitment, they will give us a road network fit for the 21st century and beyond."
