Hertz goes back to school with university rental deals

Date: 31 October 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Rental giant Hertz has scored a pair of contracts with universities in the South-East.

Imperial College London has signed up to an hourly 24/7 pool car service for staff use during working hours, with availability for students and private staff use during evenings, weekends and holidays.

The move is designed to cut the college's CO2 and includes access to models such as a VW Golf Bluemotion and an electric Mitsubishi i-Miev.

A spokesperson for Imperial college London, said: "Using [these] vehicles as our employee pool cars is reducing our reliance on taxis and personal vehicles for business trips between campuses.

"Membership is free and is available to staff and students, including our 300 clubs and societies, for private use outside working hours, providing a convenient and cost-effective alternative to traditional car use."

A near-identical initiative has also been introduced at Oxford Brookes University, which also includes low-emissions vehicles and an electric Mitsubishi i-Miev.

Henning Thiel, sustainability manager at Oxford Brookes University, said: "[This] will be an important addition to the university's suite of transport solutions, which provides an excellent service to our staff and students.

"While increasing the quality of the student experience, the car club will also help the university in reducing our environmental impacts and will have a positive effect on our local community by alleviating traffic and parking conditions."
