More 20mph zones on the way

Date: 25 February 2013

Road safety minister Stephen Hammond has published new guidance to help local authorities in England set speed limits.

The move will supposedly improve the consistency of speed limits and give councils more power to introduce 20mph zones. It follows a consultation held in 2012 and includes an online tool kit to help authorities calculate the costs and benefits of implementing new speed limits.

Hammond said: "We want to see safe roads that meet the needs of everyone, so it is vital that councils have clear and consistent guidance to help them set appropriate speed limits on their roads.

"Councils should set speed limits based on their local knowledge and on the views of the community. That is why we have launched an online toolkit alongside our new guidance to help councils make the best decisions for their local areas."
