North-East of England named electric vehicle capital

The North-East of England has been hailed as the electric car capital of the UK, having installed 1150 charging points in the region, including a "corridor" of quick chargepoints to serve drivers travelling from Scotland to Yorkshire, as a result of the Plugged-in Places EV programme, which was launched in the region in 2010.
Evidence suggests that take-up and usage of EVs has spiked in the region as a result.
Public charging points have been used more than 26,000 times since the start of this year, which has been estimated to cut operators' fuel bills by in excess of £88,000 collectively and slash 144 million grammes of CO2 across the region.
