London mayor Boris Johnson has announced plans to instigate the world's first ultra low-emissions zone in the capital. He has asked Transport for London to investigate the feasibility of only allowing zero- or very low-emissions vehicles into the city centre during working hours from 2020. TfL is to prepare a public consultation.
Johnson said: "My vision is a central zone where almost all the vehicles running during working hours are either zero or low emission. This would deliver incredible benefits in air quality and stimulate the delivery and mass use of low-emission technology."
He also announced changes to former plans for the progression of the existing low-emission zone that would theoretically save businesses using London's roads around £350m, along with £20m of funding to deal with local air quality issues. .
