Chevin: Part-time workers pose risk to public sector fleet

Date: 23 July 2014

Part-timers, shift workers and even school leavers are posing substantial risks to public service fleets following the decline of the grey fleet, says software firm Chevin Fleet Solutions.

It says that since the decline of people using their own car for business, pool cars and hire vehicles are taking up the slack, but poor management of who drives what is opening up the potential for huge duty of care connotations for those managing big, busy public sector fleets.

"The range of people potentially using everything from small cars to items of plant that fall under the remit of the fleet is very wide in many public sectors," says Chevin's sales boss David Gladding, who adds that the firm has been working with the industry to create software to help manage the risk and put in safeguards to prevent errors being made.

He also says the challenge has been incorporating the increasing numbers of diverse people working on a part-time, contract or shift basis.
