Mazda has revealed its new fourth-generation 2 supermini, the Japanese firm's answer to the market-leading Ford Fiesta.

Due in the UK next year, the car will come with a pair of 1.5-litre engines - one petrol, one diesel - which uses the Japanese car maker's Skyactiv technology, which is designed to optimise fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Details are thin on the ground at this stage (expect a lot more information towards the end of the year), but it was confirmed to BusinessCar that the oil burner in Japan will have 105hp from launch.

CO2 figures for the range are yet to be released, but the Hazumi concept car shown at Geneva this year, which closely resembles the new 2, was fitted with the 1.5 diesel, capable of delivering 'less than 90g/km' in the concept car.

The next car up in the Mazda range, the 3, will also be powered by the 1.5-litre diesel, giving the Mazda a new efficiency story in the most competitive segment in the business car sector as it should be well under 100g/km.  Currently, the smallest engine in the 3 is the 2.2 Skyactiv-D, which produces 150hp and emits 107g/km.
