FTA to launch Driver Passport to recognise high standards

Date: 15 May 2014

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is to launch a 'Driver Passport' as part of its Van Excellence scheme to recognise the best light commercial vehicle drivers.

Speaking at the organisation's Van Excellence Conference, held last month in London, Mark Cartwright, the FTA's head of vans, said the association had developed the passport in response to demand from LCV operators.

He said the initiative, which is set to launch in the autumn, would involve operators training their employees and recognising the safest, most economical drivers, and encouraging employees to carry out walk-around checks of their vans before taking to the road.

Cartwright added that the Driver Passport was a response to businesses' awareness of the damage that poor driving standards could do to their reputations.

He said organisations that had already thrown their weight behind the scheme included AAH Pharmaceuticals, Balfour Beatty, Clancy Docwra, Iron Mountain, Speedy Hire and Virgin Media.

"They are all up for some kind of driver qualification," said Cartwright. "It gives the industry recognition and can be delivered by operators."
