Majority of drivers support mandatory eye tests

Date: 06 October 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The majority of UK drivers back mandatory eye tests for motorists according to a survey by car supermarket Motorpoint.

A poll on the company's website found that 66% of the 1500 participants would welcome proposals made by road safety charity Brake for motorists to have a professional eye test every 10 years.

Currently, a person's eyesight is only tested during the driving test and if the police suspect problems during a roadside incident.

"The message is clear from our recent online poll - motorists welcome mandatory eye tests being introduced at some point in the future. How this will work in practice remains to be seen but the idea of compulsory regular eyesight tests certainly seems to make common sense," said Mark Carpenter, managing director of Motorpoint.
