Reminder over defrost theft threat

Date: 20 January 2014   |   Author: Will Stretton

You're not the only one who'd like a warm, defrosted car in the morning.

GEM Motoring Assist is reminding motorists not to leave their cars unattended with the engine running while defrosting them throughout the upcoming winter mornings.

Not only is it an offence to leave an unattended vehicle with the engine running on a public road, but it also leaves an easy opportunity for thieves.

GEM recommends that motorists stay with their vehicle at all times while they are defrosting it, whether on public roads or in their own drive. If they need to leave it unattended, then the keys should be removed from the ignition and the car should be locked, so the breakdown recovery service said.

GEM chief executive David Williams said: "Opportunist thieves are sure to be out and about because they're more likely to come across unlocked cars with keys in the ignition, all ready to go.

"Whilst it may be tempting to leave the engines running and let the car warm up before driving off, the action represents an open invitation for a thief looking for an easy prize," Williams continued. "After all, thieves can be into the car and away while your back is turned for just a few seconds. To add insult to injury, you may well find that your insurance policy will be invalidated if your car is stolen in this way."
