A virtual reality driver training facility has been launched, which claims to specialise in improving drivers' efficiency in addition to increasing safety and cutting costs.
Energy efficiency specialist Tadea opened the centre at its Effective Transport Solutions site in Washington, Sunderland.
The simulators use three screens and what the firm describes as "state-of-the-art" simulation software. More sophisticated versions are also available, which are housed in Minis with wrap-around projector screens.
The simulators can be set up as either electric or internal combustion-engined vehicles to tailor the training accordingly, and the firm is offering an EAL [a recognised employee training specialist] level one award in effective driving techniques to employees of businesses that partake in the training. The organisation specifically cited local authorities, emergency services and haulage drivers as targets for the training and qualifications.
The centre's manager, Gordon Pattie, said: "This is a fantastic facility and one which, through the high-quality training we provide, offers huge advantages for businesses with vehicles on the road - not just those based in the North-East, but across the UK as a whole.
"Our aims are to reduce accidents and to help businesses cut fuel costs and carbon emissions. It is the only training centre of its kind in the country and this project has the potential to significantly boost both safety and sustainability on our roads."
