MPs against further autonomous vehicle investment

Date: 19 January 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is concerned with MPs lack of knowledge surrounding modern vehicle technology, including autonomous vehicles.

According to a poll conducted by Dods Polling on behalf of the IMI shows half of the MPs questioned are against further investment in autonomous vehicles, despite the driverless car trials beginning this year, while 42% remained unsure what impact the vehicles would have on road safety.

The survey also revealed just over half (51%) said they are unsure of the impact autonomous vehicles would have on the insurance industry.

The IMI said the results show "a general lack of knowledge among our legislators on the impact of autonomous vehicles."

"MPs are in danger of falling asleep at the wheel and need to start paying closer attention to the implications of the changes to the industry; both in terms of legislative issues and the large skills gaps it will create in the automotive workforce who maintain cars," said IMI CEO Steve Nash.
