Transport agencies face shake-up

The Government is planning to issue a consultation on the future of its three transport agencies; the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and the Vehicle Certification Agency, according to national newspaper reports.
The consultation will be issued in October and examines multiple aspects of the three agencies with the aim of modernisation and cost reduction.
It is expected the Government will push for a centralisation of back-office services to save costs and cut staff. It is also examining the possibility of selling off driving licence test sites including some HGV test stations.
Alongside the cost savings, the consultations will also look at raising the age at which drivers have to inform the DVLA that they are still fit to drive to 75 from 70.
The driving test itself will also come under scrutiny with the possibility of readying it for more advanced car technology such as autonomous vehicles.
