The start point for the best source of fleet information

ACFO evolves in response to members' time constraints

Date: 08 January 2016   |   Author:

Fleet operators' association ACFO is to continue its direction of replacing seminars with regional meetings in 2016, planning events around the topics of light commercial vehicles and small fleets as it seeks to ensure members are able to justify the time to attend.

"ACFO is having to change because of what is happening out there; for example, some of the regional meetings having lesser numbers - we've cut the number of regional meetings because people can't get to them," ACFO chairman John Pryor told BusinessCar. "When we created the spring and autumn briefings, we wanted to get the message out and give an idea of what we would be talking about.

People can come to meetings and ask anything, but that was also the Achilles heel - people can't say why they are going out of the office." The change in approach means employees can justify why it's worth spending the time to attend sessions on a particular topic.

"We hear of the demise of the fleet manager. It's a case of the perception of fleet manager as a person that sits in the office and kicks tyres," continued Pryor. "I used to just manage fleet and then travel, then expenses and then phones, and then credit cards, and then some areas had six meetings per year. There just wasn't time."

Pryor is keen for as many fleets as possible to become ACFO members to help increase the association's sway with legislators. "I'd encourage fleets to join because we need membership to go to HMRC, DVLA, Highways England and say we represent 'X' vehicles so if you are going to do a congestion charge, Dartford etc. then listen to us and can you make the system simpler."

For 2016's seminars, ACFO has confirmed a session provisionally entitled 'A Van for All Seasons' in May, and an autumn SME session with a working title of 'Pocket Fleet', designed to attract people from areas including HR, facilities, procurement, finance.
