Dual-fuel drivers mostly use electric, Zap-Map finds

Date: 03 January 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Drivers with access to both electric and ICE-powered vehicles will choose their EV for journeys most of the time, according to research by Zap-Map.

The charging app found that around a third of EV drivers also had a petrol or diesel vehicle.

However, 85% of these drivers prefer to use their EV for local trips, 71% for commuting, and 55% even for UK-based holidays likely to include long-range driving.

Among those surveyed by Zap-Map, 49% only drive an EV, 25% have an EV and an ICE vehicle, 8% have two or more EVs, and 2% team an EV with a plug-in hybrid.

The survey also found that less than 2% of EV drivers wanted to return to a petrol or diesel car, while nine out of ten would not consider this.

Zap-Map COO and co-founder Melanie Shufflebotham said: "Our survey has shown for several years now that once you go electric, you don't go back. This year we've gone further to show that drivers who haven't quite let their conventional car go yet still choose to drive their electric. Even for those long cross-country journeys where a charge stop is likely to be necessary.

"It's an endorsement for EVs that even when the option is open to take the fossil fuel car, drivers are very happy to stick with electric.

"Anyone who still on the fence about going electric, perhaps not sure if 2023 is the year to do so just yet, this should be clear evidence that it's time to take the plunge!"
