Increase in used petrol car demand reported

Date: 10 July 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Petrol cars accounted for a majority of used car demand in the second quarter of 2023, according to Autorola.

The remarketing platform said petrol cars accounted for 60.6% of its online sales during the quarter, compared with diesel on 21.3%, hybrids on 7.9%, and EVs on 10.2%.

The move towards petrol does tally with dealer stock levels, with many more petrol cars available due to the new car market turning away from diesel in recent years. However, Autorola says increased used petrol stock levels are also reflecting buyer demand.

The average price of used petrol cars on Autorola in Q2 was £14,975, up by £51 compared with Q1 despite average age and mileage rising by four months and 1,041 miles respectively, to 45 months and 25,130 miles.

Used diesel prices remained consistent despite the move to petrol, at £17,856, with an average age and mileage of 51 months and 37,676 miles. This was the highest average age Autorola has yet reported, which it said reinforced the extent to which car replacement cycles have been extended to meet new car supply challenges.

Autorola group sales director Jon Mitchell said: "2023 has seen the biggest move to petrol and away from diesel we have experienced. Dealers are reporting that many drivers unsure as to which fuel type of used car to buy are playing it safe and purchasing a petrol. That does not help the cause of EVs or hybrids, but it does mean that used car sales remain strong,

"Despite being written off multiple times used diesel cars are still in demand and prices are strong even if they have reached their highest average age. Now that new car supply is slowly improving it will be interesting to see how used car trends will move following the September plate change.

"We may see the average age of used cars continuing to rise as extended contract cars work through the system, while prices may also slow down if volumes start to rise."
