85% of company fleet departments are facing increased pressure from board-level executives to make spending cuts, according to research from Bridgestone and Webfleet.

The survey of fleet decision-makers also revealed that 87% believe this cost pressure on businesses has made their role more important to business strategy and board-level decisions.

Despite the financial climate, 55% of those surveyed expected their businesses to grow this year, while 27% expected them to contract.

Webfleet regional director for Bridgestone Mobility Services Beverley Wise said: "As economic headwinds intensify, endangering the competitiveness of UK plc, shrewd cost control strategies are called for to help protect profit margins.

"But with resources at breaking point for many businesses, innovative solutions must be found that achieves this without jeopardising productivity and service standards."

The survey found fuel costs were the biggest target for savings, cited by 33% of fleets, with two-thirds planning to introduce new fuel strategies. This was followed by vehicle financing (29%), and driver wages and overtime (28%).
