Citroen C5 Aircross gains 48V hybrid powertrain option

Date: 30 May 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Citroen is introducing a new mild hybrid powertrain option for its C5 Aircross SUV.

The new powertrain features a 136hp petrol engine, together with a 48V battery pack, a 21kW electric motor, and an electrified dual clutch gearbox.

Citroen says the electric motor can drive the car by itself in situations when not much torque is required, such as at low speeds, when manoeuvring, or when slowing down, and assists the petrol engine when starting and accelerating. When the car is decelerating, it acts as a generator to charge the battery.

The powertrain achieves an official WLTP combined CO2 figure of 129g/km, which Citroen says is a 15% improvement on a conventional petrol C5 Aircross. Fuel savings are also said to be around 15%, increasing to 30% in urban areas.

Cars with the new powertrain also feature a specifically configured driver display, providing updates about how the hybrid system is operating.

Orders for the C5 Aircross with the new powertrain will open in June, with the first deliveries due in July.
