Ford Mondeo: Test Drive (continued)

Date: 18 June 2007

Boot
Category: Upper medium
Prices: £14,755-£23,915
Key rival: Volkswagen Passat

The car's styling looks just right and hides the car's increased proportions well, while the extra size and better interior design means all occupants have plenty of room to stretch out. The boot is the biggest in its class, too.

More technology is available as well with a higher basic specification, which means there's no 'poverty' LX model anymore, yet prices are competitive.

On the road the driving experience is as enjoyable as ever and has the best all-round combination of sportiness versus comfort in its class. However, the overall cost per mile, while better than most rivals, still can't beat the equivalent Volkswagen Passat - it's something that must irritate Ford executives simply for the amount of effort they've put into bringing the new Mondeo to the market.

And the reason the new Mondeo costs more to run? Higher depreciation caused by the higher number (and greater success) of sales. However, we believe the new car is worth the extra running costs and for that reason we'd pick it over the Passat.
