Honda FR-V 2.2 i-CTDi ES: Test Drive

Date: 04 December 2007

Category: Mini MPV
Prices: £16-127-£19837
Key rival: Vauxhall Zafira

The FR-V has always been a quiet achiever with its Mercedes B-class looks and versatile three-plus-three seating.

Gently facelifted this year, a new 140PS 1.8 petrol engine replaces the old 1.7 and 2.0 units, while the previous five-speed manual has been retired in favour of a five-speed auto gearbox or a six-speed manual.

As it was already looking good, exterior changes are minor: chrome front grille, door handles and tailgate become darker, and standard privacy glass is added. Inside, wood-effect is ditched for carbon fibre-look and upholstery fabrics are spruced up.

The 140PS 2.2 diesel, an engine we've rated highly in the Accord, Civic and CR-V, is as good an all-rounder as ever, offering 44.8mpg and 167g/km CO2 in the FR-V.

A £19,102 P11D is top-end for mini-MPVs but good spec and prestige feel make it feel a cut above. Whole-life costs expert Topcalc predicts 30.5 pence per mile.

Verdict: Still one of the best mini-MPVs, tweaked to stay competitive in look and cost
