Hyundai i30: One Minute Test Drive

Date: 18 October 2007

i30
Category: Lower medium
Price range: £10,995-£16,595
Key rival: Kia Ceed

What's new: Hyundai has now added a quicker diesel (140PS 2.0) to the already excellent i30 lower medium hatchback range.

Excellent: The value for money is spot on here - a powerful diesel hatchback with oodles of motorway capability and overtaking shove for £14,995 or 25.5ppm, according to Topcalc.

Good: Comfort levels and quality levels inside the i30 are impressive; long journeys won't be a chore. CO2 of 145g/km and fuel consumption at 51.4mpg are good, too.

Average: If you push the engine it's not as refined as the sweet 1.6 diesel, which is the pick of the range.

Poor: The handbrake is oddly plasticy in comparison to the rest of the interior materials.

Verdict: If you want the extra poke of a 2.0 over the 1.6 diesel, it's a very good low-cost car.
