Bunging a bigger engine in a large off-roader might not be the most politically correct move in history, but at least it's a diesel unit that's been slotted into the M-class.
The 4.0-litre V8 joins the range to take on the 3.6-litre diesel that Land Rover has slotted into the Range Rover Sport, the Merc's most natural rival.
Mercedes has given its 4x4 a major power advantage - the ML420 CDI has an extra 38PS, which makes it nearly two seconds quicker to 60mph, despite returning identical average fuel consumption figures and having a P11D price nearly £1000 cheaper.
It feels quick, too, to the point where you feel its height and bulk in the corners, although it's by no means unwieldy. And although it starts out cheaper than its Range Rover Sport rival, the ML's cost per mile is actually 4.2p higher at 69.0p due to a slightly worse depreciation figure.
If you can afford to run it, the ML 420 CDI is an impressive new engine in a comfortable and desirable package.
