Volkswagen Eos 2.0 TDI: One Minute Test

Date: 10 January 2007   |   Author: John Mahoney

VW Eos
Category: Convertible
Prices: £19,370-£28,095
Key Rival: Vauxhall Astra Twintop

What's new: This is our first chance to put the diesel-powered Volkswagen Eos folding tin-top under the costs microscope.

Excellent: The Eos still has one of the best folding roofs in the business. Not only can it do a complete disappearing act, it also has a sliding glass sunroof too - perfect for those four seasons in a day occasions.

Good: Can seat four without risk of decapitation once the roof winds itself up. Our car had a powerful heater, meaning topless winter motoring is a real possibility - if you're prepared to put up with the heckles that is.

Average: The TDI averages 47.1mpg on the combined cycle, but is noisy going about its work. Lacks the smoothness and flexibility of petrol.

Poor: Our car's roof creaked over the bumps, hinting at roof flex. It also, on one occasion, dumped a small trickle of water in my lap after being parked in the rain.

Verdict: Not as cheap as some of its rivals at £21,512 but its packaging and reasonable 29.6ppm appeal.
