VW Passat 2.0 TDi SEL DSG: First Drive

Date: 21 February 2007

Prices: £23,067
Category: Upper medium
Key Rival: Toyota Avensis

VW is extending the use of its 170PS 2.0-litre diesel, adding it to the Passat range on top of the Golf, Audi A3, A4 and A6, Seat Leon Cupra and Skoda Octavia vRS.

It's a cracking engine, and not as noisy in this application as it has been in one or two other uses.

Our test car (£23,067) was fitted with the optional DSG gearbox, which is one of the most competent autos on the market. It suits the Passat's unhurried, decent-quality feel.

The Passat also stacks up financially. At 35.9 pence per mile, the costs are less than most rivals that fit an auto to their upper medium saloon. To one side, the Vectra and 407 are above, while the likes of the C-class and 3-series also cost more per mile.

Our 2006 Fleet Car of the Year has lost none of its appeal 12 months on, and the new engine is a worthy and appealing addition.

Verdict: A good addition at a reasonable cost per mile enhances an already impressive range
