Jaguar X-type 2.2D SE auto: Test Drive

Key rival: BMW 3-series

It's taken a while but Jaguar's X-type now comes with every engine and gearbox combination.

So alongside a facelift, Jaguar has also given its 2.2-litre diesel an automatic option.

The gear changes are smooth and barely noticeable during normal driving. Compromises come through increased CO2 emissions - 184g/km over the manual's 159g/km.

Acceleration's also affected - the auto takes 9.5secs to 60mph, while the manual manages 8.7secs. Sadly, the facelift brings no power increase for the unaltered 145PS engine.

The X-type also has a new nose, bringing it in line with newer Jags like the XF. It also gains the aggressively attractive 'growling' Jaguar badge.

New seat designs, chrome detailing and interior trim additions complete the update.

Verdict: Costs of 63.9p per mile are high, but the new auto is a good addition to aging X-type range
