Audi A1 2.0 TDI Sport: Test Drive Review

Date: 06 July 2012

P11D price: £17,890

Audi has shoehorned the 2.0-litre version of its TDI diesel engine beneath the bonnet of the diminutive A1 city car, creating a more powerful 143hp alternative to the single, previous diesel option of a 105hp 1.6.

The addition of a larger engine means this model is a little dirtier than the 99g/km 1.6, although at 108g/km and with 68.9mpg it is still clean enough to impress. A modest emissions penalty is also a small price to pay, as the 2.0-litre unit bestows the A1 with much smoother and more able performance, transforming it from an underpowered small diesel to a potent one.

Three doors, four seats and a modest footprint mean practicality is limited, but a five-door, five-seat Sportback is available and improves things a little. Other than low running costs and the new engine, the Audi's biggest draws lie in its well-finished cabin, charming looks and badge appeal.
