VW Beetle Cab 1.4 TSI 50s: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: Volkswagen's twice-revived Beetle is now available as a convertible, bringing with it three special-edition models dubbed 50s, 60s and 70s Editions.
Excellent: If you're a fan of the hatchback's styling then the Cabriolet will be right up your street. The latest incarnation of the Beetle has even more nods to the classic original including a flat upper glovebox and a skinny, dished steering wheel.
Good: The electric fabric roof folds up and down quickly and easily. Press and hold the square button in between the sun visors and it folds down in 9.5 seconds at up to 31mph.
Average: The 1.4-litre TSI engine may have 160hp but it doesn't come across as a quick car. The engine needs a bit of encouragement, as do the brakes, and the ride can be a little on the bumpy side.
Poor: This 50s version isn't cheap at £24,665. Emissions of 158g/km don't help its cause, nor do they assist the 60.7ppm figure.
Verdict: The Beetle will never be a big fleet player in any guise, but it isn't without its charm and has its place as an emotionally appealing product.
