Honda Civic Type R One-Minute Test

This is the latest version of Honda's hot-hatch performance icon, the Civic Type-R. Now boasting 310hp from its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, the Type-R is unmatched for performance and overt looks among front-wheel drive performance hatchbacks, and emits a reasonable 170g/km.
Excellent
The raw explosive performance is certainly dramatic, and it's also worth noting that the five-door's boot is almost 100 litres bigger than any rival.
Good
There's no mistaking this for any other Civic thanks to what Honda describes as the "aggressive aerodynamic styling" honed at the company's motorsport facility in Japan. Whether that's a good or bad thing depends on what you think of the looks. Equipment levels are also suitably high.
Average
The Civic Type-R may be more powerful than key competitors, but it is also priced higher, and the £28,440 Seat Leon Cupra is 14g/km more efficient.
Poor
Pushing 310hp through the front wheels is ambitious, and getting much of that power transmitted to the road in even mildly damp conditions is a challenge. The car's cost per mile figure is also higher than all major rivals.
