FRANKFURT SHOW: VW unveils new range-topping Golf

Date: 17 September 2009

The crowning glory to the new mk6 Volkswagen Golf range has been revealed, in the form of a 270PS four-wheel drive R model arriving before the end of the year.

Replacing the last-generation Golf's R32 top model, the new R is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine instead of the R32's 250PS 3.2 litre unit. That change means emissions drop below 200g/km for this high-powered model, and average fuel economy is at 33.2mpg. Acceleration is 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, 5.5 with the DSG automatic gearbox, and the car is limited to 155mph. New front and rear bumpers, and a pair of centrally-mounted exhaust pipes, unique rear lights and 18-inch alloys mark our the R as above the current range-topping GTi.

Prices will be announced nearer the December launch.
