Pothole advice for local authorities

Date: 24 April 2012

Local authorities have been given advice on how to tackle the problem of potholes on roads.

The Pothole Review, commissioned by local transport minister Norman Baker, falls into three main themes: prevention is better than cure, right first time, and clarity for the public.

It suggests local authorities intervene at the right time to reduce the amount of potholes forming and prevent bigger problems later, avoid continuous bills by doing it once and correctly, and communicate with the public about what is being done and how.

Baker said: "We've given £3 billion to councils for road maintenance over the next four years, but money can only go so far and the old adage rings true: prevention is indeed better than cure."
