Fresh expenses scandal as MPs' £4million transport bill is uncovered

Date: 07 February 2013   |   Author: Guy Bird

UK MPs claimed more than £4 million in travel expenses in the last tax year, from big fuel bills to unnecessary London congestion charges according to an expose in Auto Express magazine.

Top of the expenses offender list was Khalid Mahmood, Labour MP for Perry Barr in Birmingham, who claimed £12,783.80 between 2011/12 for use of his own car, including dependents, volunteers and staff.

Meanwhile, Margaret Beckett, Labour MP for Derby South, claimed back congestion charges of £2520, the price of annual season ticket for 252 days, even though Parliament only sits for 150 days a year.

The news comes in the same week as Alphabet revealed that fleets run by a fleet manager had dropped by 37% in a year and is proof that a good fleet manager is a handy tool in any organisation's fight to control costs.
