Facelifted VW Golf GTE priced from £30,635

Date: 31 March 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Volkswagen has announced the facelifted version of its Golf GTE plug-in hybrid will cost from £30,635.

This price excludes the £2,500 discount offered by the Government's Plug-In Car Grant and also offers a saving of £3,420 compared with the outgoing model.

It is powered by a 150hp 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to a 102hp electric motor, with Volkswagen claiming the GTE is capable of covering the 0-62mph sprint in 7.6 seconds while returning 166/157mpg, depending on the version.

Again, depending on the version, the model emits 38/40g/km of CO2, which places it in the lowest 2017/2018 BIK band.

Volkswagen said the model's battery allows it to travel for up to 31 miles before petrol power kicks in.

Two trim levels are offered, with the more expensive trim level - GTE Advance - mimicking that of the larger Passat GTE upper medium model, with the addition of an updated sat-nav system, heated seats, 65% tinted windows and a front centre armrest.

According to VW, it takes 3.4 hours to charge the battery using a three-pin plug with the time decreasing to 2.1 hours when an electric vehicle charging point is used, with drivers being able to monitor the progress of recharges via a dedicated smartphone app.

"The new Golf GTE - with its revised pricing and significantly enhanced appeal - perfectly represents Volkswagen's ongoing commitment to offering accessible hybrid technology in an attractive and usable package," said director of Volkswagen in the UK, Alison Jones.

Jones added: "The updated Golf GTE, sitting alongside the rest of the 113-model updated Golf range, is more than ever a genuine alternative for everyday driving and we are looking forward to seeing more private buyers, and fleet users, take the opportunity to explore its capabilities on UK roads."
