New device stops drivers from using phones behind the wheel as new laws come into force

Fleet management and telematics company Trakm8 has launched a device it claimed can prevent drivers from using smartphones at the wheel.

Timed to coincide with the roll-out of harsher penalties - where drivers are now fined £200 and given six points on their licence if caught - Trakm8's CellControl system prevents fleet drivers from using their mobile phone while driving company-owned vehicles.

"Our message is simple and clear: Do not get distracted by your mobile phone while driving. It may seem innocent, but holding and using your phone at the wheel risks serious injury and even death to yourself and other road users," said transport secretary, Chris Grayling. "Doubling penalties will act as a strong deterrent to motorists tempted to pick up their phone while driving and will also mean repeat offenders could find themselves banned from our roads if they are caught twice."

Previous research by Trakm8 indicated that 16% of company car drivers agreed that the introduction of heavier punishments would deter them from using their phone.

Compatible with Android, Apple, BlackBerry and Windows devices, CellControl uses software, a smartphone app and an in-cab device to block driver access to the phone while the car is moving. If motorists attempt to access the phone the breaches are logged and reports are emailed to fleet managers.

Emergency phone calls are exempt from the restriction and can be made at any time, the company said.

"Having a tool like CellControl helps to reduce the risk of employees breaking the law, but more importantly, it will hugely benefit the safety of drivers," said Colin Ferguson, managing director of fleet and optimisation at Trakm8. "It is a misconception that mobile phone use amongst employees is an unaddressable risk, but this product gives business the opportunity to ensure their mobile phone policies are enforced."
