Mercedes-Benz has added a new diesel engine option to its E-Class executive car range.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine produces 340hp, and replaces the previous 258hp 3.0-litre diesel.

The new engine is available with E-Class saloon and estate models, and in the saloon achieves official combined fuel economy of 48.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 154g/km, with the figures for the estate worsening slightly to 46.3mpg and 161g/km respectively.

Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, with 0 to 62mph acceleration times of 4.9 seconds for the saloon, and 5.1 seconds for the estate.

Prices for cars with the new engine start at £52,685 for the saloon, and £54,685 for the estate.

Mercedes has also announced details of the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic Coupe and Cabriolet performance models.

Along with the previously announced saloon and estate versions, they will be fitted with a 3.0-litre bi-turbo petrol engine, featuring mild-hybrid technology, which produces 435hp.

Official fuel economy and CO2 figures are 32.5mpg and 203g/km for the Coupe, and 32.1mpg and 200g/km for the Cabriolet, and 0 to 62mph times are 4.4 seconds and 4.5 seconds respectively, with top speeds again limited to 155mph.

Prices start at £62,835 for the Coupe, and £74,050 for the Cabriolet.

All the new models are available to order now, with deliveries starting in September.
