New BMW i5 and 5 Series unveiled

Date: 24 May 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

BMW has revealed the new eighth-generation version of its 5 Series executive car, including the new i5 electric variant.

The i5 will be available with a choice of two powertrains - the 340hp eDrive40, and the 601hp M60 xDrive. The former has a provisional range of up to 361 miles on the WLTP test cycle, with the latter a range of up to 320 miles.

BMW has also announced details of the 5 Series with a 208hp mild hybrid petrol engine, with WLTP fuel economy figures of 44.1-49.5mpg, and CO2 emissions of 130-144g/km.

Compared with the outgoing 5 Series, the new model is 97mm longer, 32mm wider, and 36mm taller, with a 20mm longer wheelbase, which according to BMW means more interior space, especially in the rear.

Its exterior design includes a variety of measures designed to improve its aerodynamics, such as air flap control, an 'AirCurtain' in the front apron, aerodynamic wheels, and a smooth underbody, resulting in a Cd value of 0.23. Combined, these elements are said to increase the i5's range by up to 29 miles.

An 'EfficiencyCoach' system will also offer drivers tips on more economical driving.

It will be the first BMW in the UK to feature leather-like 'Veganza' upholstery as standard, including on the seats, dashboard, and door panels.

Another interior feature is the 'Interaction Bar' previously seen with the larger 7 Series - a touch control interface which runs the length of the instrument panel and into the door panels.

Also featuring is BMW's 'Curved Display' infotainment arrangement, which merges together a 12.3in driver display and a 14.9in infotainment screen.

Other features include AI-driven servicing notifications and in-car gaming, while a panoramic roof will also be available for the first time with a 5 Series.

UK equipment grades will include M Sport, M Sport Pro, and M60.

Prices start at £49,850 for the petrol mild hybrid 5 Series, £73,200 for the i5 eDrive40, and £96,840 for the i5 M60 xDrive. Orders are open now with the first deliveries due in October.

The new 5 Series range will then expand further next year with plug-in hybrid and estate variants.
