BVRLA leasing fleet hits five-year high amid business contract hire growth

Date: 12 October 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

The size of BVRLA members' leasing fleet has returned to a level last seen in 2018.

The rental and leasing industry body has published its latest Leasing Outlook report, with data running up to the end of Q2 2023.

This shows overall fleet growth of 1.96% year-on-year, while the number of business contract hire cars has grown by 4.4%, and the number of salary sacrifice cars has rocketed by 56%.

Overall car fleet growth of 1.8% is however down on van fleet growth of 2.4%, with car numbers dragged down by an 8.4% decline in personal contract hire.

The report also shows the continued strong growth of electrified cars in the company car market, with 44% of new business contract hire cars in Q2 having been EVs, and a further 22% having been plug-in hybrids.

This has contributed to the average CO2 emissions from the BVRLA car fleet hitting a new low of 85.8g/km - a 10g/km reduction - while the average among new BVRLA cars during the quarter was just 60.1g/km.

Commenting with the release of the report, BVRLA director of corporate affairs Toby Poston said: "The sector is again demonstrating its ability to adapt to changing market conditions to meet customer needs. Achieving growth in a turbulent market is no easy feat.

"The direction of travel towards electric vehicles is one way, with business users and company-provided vehicles leading the charge."
