Grey still most popular UK new car paint colour

Date: 22 January 2024   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Grey was the UK's most popular new car paint colour for the sixth consecutive year in 2023, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The organisation said more than half a million grey cars were registered, accounting for 26.8% of the market.

Black (20.2% of registrations), and white (16.5%) were second and third on the list, also for the sixth year in a row.

The top ten was completed by blue (15.1%), red (7.5%, having steadily declined since 2019), silver (6.5%), green (2.8%, the highest share since 2004), orange (0.9%), yellow (0.6%), and bronze (0.3%).

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "2023 was a bumper year for the British new car market, as buyers continued to gravitate towards familiar monochrome hues for another year - even as ever more motorists embrace new technologies.

"Car manufacturers have diligently expanded their offerings, with a huge selection of colour options available across hundreds of models and thousands of specification options. The extensive variety allows drivers flexibility in choosing a tint that embodies their individuality and style."
